BASIC LIFE SUPPORT AND FIRST AID (IN BRIEF)

Please note:

  • Before you attend a casualty, look for your own safety, safety of the victim, and safety of your co-workers.
  • Know your limitations. Don’t Basic Life Support and First Aid in brief try to overdo.
  • Use B.S.I.(Body Substance Isolation) precautions.

D: LOOK FOR THE DANGER FOR SELF, FOR THE CASUALTY, AND CO-WORKERS.

R: CHECK FOR RESPONSE.

VICTIM RESPONSIVE: Assess the victim and give first aid as needed.

VICTIM NOT RESPONSIVE: PROCEED.

HELP: CALL E.M.S.NUMBER AND ASK TO BRING AN A.E.D.

THEN PROCEED TO A

A: OPEN AIRWAY.
And proceed to B.

B: CHECK BREATHING FOR 5-10 SECONDS.

VICTIM BREATHING: PLACE HIM IN RECOVERY POSTION AND GIVE FIRST AID.
VICTIM NOT BREATHING: GIVE 2 RESCUE BREATHS AND CHECK FOR C.

C: CIRCULATION- CHECK PULSE FOR 5-10 SECONDS.
PULSE PALPABLE – CONTINUE BREATHING.
PULSE NOT PALPABLE – START C.P.R. TILL A.E.D. ARRIVES.

In case of a child check response, if not responsive,open airway, check breathing, check pulse, start CPR for 1 minute, then call for help.

CHECK RESPONSE:- ( Is victim conscious)

SHAKE AND SHOUT in adult- Ask -Are you O.K.?

(In an infant tap the sole).

CHECK FOR LEVEL OF CONSCIOUSNESS
A. Awake.
V. Responding to verbal stimulus.
P. Responding to painful stimulus.
U. Unresponsive.

If not responding, call EMS number.

CHECK BREATHING:- Check for 5-10 seconds.
Look, Listen and Feel.

RESCUE BREATHING:-
Check Response.
Call EMS number.
Open Airway.
Check Breathing.
If victim is not breathing, make a tight seal around the lips.(encircle nose and lips in case of an infant)
Give 2 rescue breaths, for 1 second each. Watch for chest to rise and fall.
Reposition to open airway, if needed.
Repeat breathing, @ one breath every five seconds in adult (one breath every 3 seconds in an infant) and assess the victim every 2 minutes.

CHECK CIRCULATION:- Check for at least 5-10 seconds.
Check for Carotid pulse in adults and Children,

C.P.R.:-
Check Response.
Call EMS number.
Open Airway.
Check Breathing.
Give 2 rescue breaths.
Check pulse.
If pulse not palpable,
Do alternate 30 chest compressions and 2 rescue breaths.( 5 cycle in 2 minutes).
(In an infant for one rescuer compression ventilation ratio is 30:2 and 15:2 for 2 rescuers).
Assess the victim every 2 minutes, and continue CPR till;
-Victim shows signs of circulation,
-An AED arrives.
-Or Medical Help arrives.

[USING AN A.E.D.
Use only if in an unconscious victim, pulse is not palpable.
Place the A.E.D. near the victim.
Switch on the machine, and follow instructions.
